Should Manchester United consider this bizarre swap deal?

Xherdan ShaqiriAnder Herrera has only been at Manchester United for a few months, but there are already some rumblings of discontent around Old Trafford. He’s gradually started to slip down the pecking order as players like Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini’s form has started to improve. Indeed, it’s not immediately clear what his role is going to be at Manchester United. What’s going to happen when Michael Carrick returns from injury? Will there still be room for him in the squad?

What if Louis Van Gaal opts to bring in another midfielder during the January transfer window (The Red Devils have been strongly linked with a move for Roma’s Kevin Strootman, after all). Herrera could find himself hung out to dry.

As it happens, Manchester United’s deal for Herrera always struck me as a little bit odd. With Juan Mata struggling to make the grade at Old Trafford, why would the club want to sign another, slightly less impressive number 10? For all his obvious technical talent, it’s not clear that the Spaniard is capable of effecting games in a meaningful way.

This brings me to The Metro‘s rather bizarre claim that Manchester United are considering engineering a swap deal with Bayern Munich that will see Ander Herrera going one way and Xherdan Shaqiri (and £6m cash) going the other. Could the club really be considering cutting ties with Herrera so early on in his time at Old Trafford?

That’s difficult to say. Still, if Louis Van Gaal can get his hands on Xherdan Shaqiri, he’ll be getting an excellent player. The Swiss ace has plenty of pace, he’s got bags full of technical talent and his direct attacking nature can be a joy to behold. He’s also currently in better form than the likes of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, despite his game time being rather limited at the Allianz Arena.

Whilst I would be sad to see Ander Herrera go, if it meant signing Shaqiri, I’d get over it quite quickly. Perhaps it’s time to put more faith in players like Juan Mata and to start bolstering other areas of the pitch?

What’s your take? Would you entertain a swap deal between Ander Herrera and Xherdan Shaqiri?
