Juan Mata 2Manchester United star Juan Mata has had a funny old career. At Chelsea , he was a hero. He won their Player of the Year award two years running, made 135 appearances for his club and scored 33 goals. He was supremely effective.

Then Jose Mourinho sent some criticism in his direction and he hasn’t been quite the same since. The fact that the Portuguese mastermind was willing to sell him to a rival says a lot. Mourinho was unprepared to let Demba Ba go to Arsenal, but he was happy for Mata to wind up at Old Trafford? How bizarre.

As things currently stand, it looks like a smart decision on the part of Chelsea. Whilst Juan Mata has never struggled for goals, his form has been lacking from the moment he’s thrown on a United shirt. He’s not as snappy as he used to be and his decision making faculties aren’t as keenly focused as they once were. At just 26-years-old, I’d imagine that there are a few twists and turns left for the Spaniard yet.

Let’s not forget, when you’re 26-years-old, you should be at the peak of your game. Your development as a player is more or less over, you’re at the height of your athleticism and you should have all the experience you need to perform at the top level. So why is Juan Mata struggling to produce performances at the moment?

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Atletico Madrid are considering making a £20m bid for Juan Mata during the January transfer window. Juventus and Valencia are also thought to be interested. Could a bidding war be on the cards?

£20m is about £17m than Manchester United spent on Mata almost a year ago. Despite this, it’s still a lot of money. It’s the kind of money that could be quickly and efficiently reimbursed into the squad. Perhaps Louis Van Gaal could use the money to find a slightly more effective midfielder?

It’s certainly worth considering. I’m sorry that Juan Mata hasn’t been a hit at Old Trafford, but there’s no use just hoping that things come good. Manchester United need to spring into action and right the wrongs of their past.

If that means sending Juan Mata packing, then so be it.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United consider cashing in on their Spanish superstar? Is £20m a fair price-tag for Juan Mata?
