When you assess the strength and depth of Arsenal’s squad, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever draw the conclusion that Arsene Wenger’s squad is short of quality attacking midfielders.
In fact, it’s the one area of the squad where The Professor seems to be spoilt for choice. Every where you look there’s a talented, technically minded number ten battling it out to keep his position in the team.
There’s Mesut Ozil (who’s currently out injured), there’s Aaron Ramsey, there’s Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and there’s Mikel Arteta. There’s also players like Tomas Rosicky, Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain (who primarily plays down the flanks) and even Abou Diaby (who admittedly can’t be relied upon).
With this in mind, it’s a little surprising to see The Gunners pick up a link to Real Madrid star Isco (Source: The Metro). He’s an attacking minded player in the same mould as Xabi Alonso (or even Santi Cazorla). It’s easy to see him fitting in at The Emirates, but it’s not entirely clear that this is a signing that Arsene Wenger needs to make.
Perhaps Arsene Wenger is regretting his decision not to re-sign Cesc Fabregas. It must upset The Professor no end to see his ex-captain pulling the strings at Stamford Bridge. Maybe he views Isco as a means by which he can redeem himself?
What’s more, it’s worth noting that Isco is a player who would improve this Arsenal side. I have little doubt that he’d waltz right into Arsenal’s first team. With Ozil, Cazorla and Ramsey all failing to provide the goods at the moment, perhaps Wenger feels that a signing like this is necessary.
Still, with the aforementioned source claiming that Isco would cost Arsenal £40m, Arsene Wenger needs to think long and hard about this decision. His first priority should be fixing his defense (I’d argue that he needs to sign at least one centre-back and a defensive midfielder), before he can start considering luxury signings like this.
That being said, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at this signing were it to go ahead.
