Manchester United spent big during the summer transfer window, but they’ve failed to deal with all the issues that are deeply embedded within their squad. They lack quality in just about every area of the pitch and their new attacking recruits are still settling in. It could be some time before we see The Red Devils back at their best.
Given how slow Manchester United’s progress has been this season, it’ll be interesting to see how Louis Van Gaal reacts in the transfer market. According to The Express, he’s going to look to add even more attacking flair to his squad.
The source suggests that Van Gaal has his sights set on PSV’s talented winger, Memphis Depay. The Dutch ace has been in fine form for the last 24 months or so. Last year he found the back of the net 16 times in 43 appearances. This season, he’s already managed to score 12 goals in 13 appearances. He’s getting better all the time and he’s already remarkably effective in the final third.
Louis Van Gaal will know Memphis Depay well. The fleet-footed forward scored twice for the Netherlands during the 2014 World Cup, back when Van Gaal was still in charge of the international team. That made Depay the youngest Dutchman to ever score at the World Cup. He’s just 20-years-old.
He’s got so many good years ahead of him. Could some of that time be spent in a Manchester United shirt? According to his current manager, Phillip Cocu, Depay will inevitable move on at some stage. Check out these comments from PSV’s head-honcho:
“Of course Memphis will be sold, you can’t stop that but it’s okay. It’s great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he’s ready for a bigger step. That’s great.” (Source: The Express)
I’d argue that Depay is already ready for a bigger step. I can’t help but wonder if Louis Van Gaal feels the same way. I certainly hope that he’s willing to test the waters with a January bid. He may be young, but Memphis Depay is a special talent. He could well put Manchester United back on the pathway to success.
