Maxi PereiraWith Glen Johnson’s future at Anfield uncertain (to say the least), it would surprise very few if Brendan Rodgers spent part of the January transfer window hunting for a brand new full-back.

Johnson has been a top performer over the years thanks to his attacking flair and his pace up and down the flanks. Unfortunately, he’s not quite as nippy as he used to be. He’s less effective in the final third, gets caught out defensively and his overall contribution is slipping. It’s probably about time for him to move on.

But this begs the question: who should Brendan Rodgers bring in to help bolster his defense during the January transfer window?

The Metro seem to have supplied an answer. They suggest that The Reds have trained their eyes on Benfica’s talented right-back, Maxi Pereira. He may not be any younger than Glen Johnson (both full-backs are 30-years-old), but I’d argue that there’s more balance to the Uruguayan’s game.

Defensively speaking, he rarely ever gets caught out. I put this down to his experience at club and International level. He’s made 190 appearances for Benfica (at the time of writing) and he’s got 95 caps for a decent Uruguay side. When you’ve got that much game-time to your name, you tend to develop a huge amount of know-how.

When he has the opportunity to barrel forward, he’s able to put in a fine cross. He’s even managed to chip in with 10 goals during his time at Benfica.

The aforementioned source claims that talks between Pereira’s agent and his club about a contract extension have broken down. Liverpool may be able to leverage this situation to help them land the Uruguayan as part of a cut-price deal.

One thing’s for sure. Brendan Rodgers can’t simply sit still and hope that Glen Johnson regains his best form. He needs to act as soon as possible. Bringing in a player like Maxi Pereira looks like a smart move.

What’s your take? Who should Liverpool look to sign during the January transfer window?
