Is this £24m man the right choice for Manchester United?

The Manchester United defense that lined up against Arsenal was bizarre to say the least. The lack of experience in that back-four is quite remarkable. How does a club with this much history, success and drive end up in a position like this? The Gunners were able to slice The Red Devils open again and again. It was all a little too easy. If Arsene Wenger’s team had any cutting edge whatsoever, they’d have closed the game out by half-time.

This leaves Louis Van Gaal with something of a conundrum. Typically there’s not a lot of good talent available during the January transfer window. But such is the pressing nature of Manchester United’s need, that the Dutchman can’t afford to wait until the summer. He needs to act and he needs to act now, even if that means spending a little more than he would hope.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United have set their sights on Atletico Madrid star, Miranda.

The Brazilian ace has played a key role at Madrid for the last three seasons and was essential to his team’s success last season. He’s a smart footballer who positions himself well, throws himself into tackles and wins the ball back on a regular basis. At 30-years-old, he’s got bags of experience and he’s even managed to accrue 13 caps for the Brazilian international team.

As a result, Miranda won’t come cheap for Manchester United. The aforementioned source claims that The Red Devils will need to cough up at least £24m if they’re to close this deal. But what choice does Louis Van Gaal have? If a quality centre-back like this is available during the January transfer window, he’d be foolish to pass this opportunity up.

Besides, given Miranda’s ability, I wouldn’t be surprised if he proved to be a good investment (despite his age). Let’s hope so anyway.
