Jonathan CalleriArsenal’s summer spending seems to have produced mixed results. The Gunners bolstered their attack in a very effective manner. Both Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck have hit the ground running in North London and are only likely to improve as time progresses.

But what about their defense? Arsene Wenger let Bacary Sagna and Thomas Vermaelen go in the summer and I’d argue that he didn’t do enough to replace them. Yes, new defenders were brought in, but they just aren’t of the same calibre as the players that were shipped out. Calum Chambers, at only 19-years-old, is clearly no Bacary Sagna – not yet any way.

So surely it’s this part of the pitch that Arsene Wenger will look to fix during the January transfer window? He couldn’t possibly look to add another striker to his ranks, could he?

Well, according to The Metro, Arsenal are ‘ready to sign’ Boca Juniors talented young striker, Jonathan Calleri. Of course they are. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, can you?

The aforementioned source claims that he has been compared to Gonzalo Higuain. This is a needlessly complex way of saying that he’s a good finisher who happens to hail from South America. Still, he’s not quite on Higuain’s level just yet. The 21-year-old has scored 5 goals in 19 games this season. That’s not bad for a young player, but Higuain’s accustomed to scoring a goal every couple of games.

With Joel Campbell struggling for game time at The Emirates, its hard to see where Calleri might fit in. Signing him would probably necessitate sending Campbell packing.

Still, if Arsene Wenger brings in a talented young forward like this and a couple of top defenders, I certainly wont be disappointed. Let’s just hope that he’s given the budget and the backing to bring in the players that Arsenal so desperately need.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for Jonathan Calleri? Who else should they be looking at during the January transfer window?
