Goalkeeper - Victor ValdesIsn’t it a little strange that a goal-keeper with as much quality and experience as Victor Valdes is still without a club?

He left Barcelona in the summer, when his contract came to an end. Any clubs who wanted to snap him up as a free transfer could, but as of yet, it just hasn’t happened.

In all likelihood, Valdes is just waiting for the right offer to come in from the right club. He’s made over 500 appearances for one of the biggest clubs in the world and he’s won 21 major pieces of silverware, so it’s probably only a matter of time before he ends up between the sticks once again.

His main issue at the moment seems to be proving his fitness to his suitors. He’s been convalescing for a number of months following a long-term knee injury. Any one who snaps him up will want to make sure that they’re not buying a crocked player.

As The Metro notes, Louis Van Gaal seems to have made the first move by allowing Valdes the opportunity to recuperate at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground. The source suggests that if Valdes proves his fitness, he’ll link up with the first team and become a permanent member of Van Gaal’s squad.

At 32-years-old, Victor Valdes is now entering the Autumn of his career. Luckily goalkeepers seem to have a longer shelf-life than out-field players. If Manchester United do sign him, they can expect him to perform for another three-to-four years, at the very least.

He’d provide a great back-up option to David De Gea (who interestingly enough, has recently been linked with a move to Real Madrid) and his winning mentality would be good to have around Old Trafford – especially given their current struggle to find their best form.

Competition in all areas is always a healthy thing. Whether it’ll be enough to steady the Manchester United ship remains to be seen, but it’ll certainly be a step in the right direction.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Manchester United offer Victor Valdes a long-term deal?
