Virgil van DijkArsenal fans must still be amazed that their club failed to sign a new centre-back during the January transfer window. I fail to believe that there weren’t any good options out there. Arsene Wenger realised that he needed a right-back early on in the transfer window, so he went out and bought both Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers.

If he worked hard enough to find a quality centre-back, surely he would have been able to bring somebody else in?

Whatever the case, The Gunners will have to try and rectify this issue during the January transfer window. It’s not a great time to look to bring players in, but it’s not like Arsene Wenger has much choice. He needs to act and he needs to act as soon as possible.

This brings me to The Metro’s claim that Arsenal have made Celtic’s top centre-back Virgil van Dijk their ‘number one transfer target’. Should this news have fans dancing in the streets?

The Dutchman is certainly an astute defender. Whilst the Scottish Premier League isn’t as competitive as the Premier League, it is pretty scrappy and physically demanding. To stand out as a defender, you do need to be capable of delivering consistent performances. Van Dijk certainly ticks that box.

What’s more, he’s not going to break the bank for The Gunners. The aforementioned source suggests that Arsene Wenger is going to test the waters with a £7m bid. Whether that’s enough to persuade Celtic to sell remains to be seen, but it should give them pause for thought.

At 23-years-old Virgil van Dijk is still developing, but it’s clear that he’s got the talent necessary to succeed. What’s more, I’m sure that he’d jump at the opportunity to play for a top club. If Arsenal come knocking, is he really going to turn them down?

Let’s hope not. The sooner Arsenal can bring in a quality option, the better.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners make a move for Virgil van Dijk?
