Sami KhediraFor the last six months or so, Real Madrid star Sami Khedira has been linked with a move to Arsenal. The Gunners’ current defensive midfield options are severely lacking, so the big German could be the perfect fix.

But according to The Express, Manchester United are ready to hijack this deal. Could Louis Van Gaal really pull this feat off and is Khedira the right man for the job at Manchester United?

I’m not surprised that there are multiple clubs interested in Sami Khedira. After all, his Real Madrid contract will expire at the end of the season, when he’ll become available as a free transfer. At this stage there are sure to be plenty of interested suitors.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, will likely want to sell during the January transfer window, when they can still get a fee from the sale. Of course, Khedira’s price-tag will be seriously marked-down, but there’s not much the Galacticos can do about that now. You can hardly blame Arsenal and Manchester United for sniffing out a bargain, can you?

The Express claim that Manchester United’s main transfer target is Kevin Strootman, but that Roma are playing hard-ball over his price-tag. It’s thought that they view Khedira as a cheap (but still top quality) alternative.

Of course, The Red Devils already have Daley Blind among their ranks, who’s currently operating as their defensive midfielder. Going forward, however, I’m not sure that the Dutchman has what it takes to perform this role for Manchester United. From what we’ve seen so far, he’s finding it difficult to adapt to the pace of the Premier League.

Sami Khedira, on the other hand, is an experienced international who has played the game at the top level for quite some time. I expect he’ll be able to adapt to English football fairly quickly. This is especially true, given his physical stature and his strength in the air.

Whether Louis Van Gaal will be able to beat Arsene Wenger to the punch remains to be seen, but it certainly looks like a smart move for Manchester United.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United make Sami Khedira their key transfer target?
