Should Arsenal sign this £16m Serie A bargain?

CallejonNapoli struck a real bargain when they signed former Real Madrid star, Jose Callejon for just £8m about a year a go.

The Spanish ace only managed to score 20 goals in 76 appearances for Madrid, a figure he’s already managed to match in the Italian league. In 52 appearances for Napoli, he’s found the back of the net 20 times and he’s also chipped in with 6 assists.

That’s not a bad return for somebody who’s often deployed as a winger. It’s also worth considering that he will have needed some time to gel with his team-mates and adapt to his new surroundings. The fact that he slotted in so easily is very promising indeed.

At 27-years-old, he finally looks ready for the big time. He looks ready to perform on the biggest stages possible. Is it any wonder that Premier League clubs are starting to register their interest?

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Arsenal could be about to seal a ‘cut-price’ deal for the Spaniard. The source suggests that Callejon is dissatisfied with his current club’s progress (they didn’t qualify for the Champions League and they’re currently seventh in the Serie A table) and that he’s looking for an exit route.

Napoli won’t want to sell him after just a single season, but given his current mindset and their financial situation, they’d probably do business for the right price. The Express claim that they rejected £25m offers for Callejon from Liverpool and Chelsea during the summer, but may now be willing to sell for as little as £16m.

Given his versatility and his goal-scoring nous, it’s certainly a deal that Arsene Wenger should consider. Yes, he brought in Danny Welbeck during the summer, but with players like Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell struggling to provide the goods and Olivier Giroud injured, bringing in another attacking recruit could be a good move.

Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger is still as good a bargain hunter as he used to be.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners still be interested in signing another striker? Is Jose Callejon the right man for the job?

I would take him as a replacement for Rosicky who isn’t getting games or contributing to much goals or assist.
