MarceloDespite having spent big on Luke Shaw during the summer, The Express recently ran an article suggesting that Manchester United are on the hunt for a new ‘left-back’. It’s funny how quickly things change, isn’t it?

Whilst Manchester United brought in Shaw during the summer transfer window, they may not have expected that Patrice Evra would also leave the club. This has thrust the former Southampton man (who’s only 19-years-old) into the spotlight and I’m not sure he’s quite ready for the role he’s been given.

With all this in mind, it wouldn’t surprise me if Louis Van Gaal were willing to consider bringing in an experienced left-back at the next available opportunity.

But let’s get back to that Express article. The source claims that Manchester United have their eyes on Barcelona star Jordi Alba, before changing course and labelling Real Madrid’s Brazilian superstar, Marcelo, a more ‘realistic’ option.

Either player would significantly improve this Manchester United side, so this news should have fans very excited indeed. The aforementioned source suggests that Real Madrid are willing to sell Marcelo as they’re looking to replace him with Bayern Munich star David Alaba. Could the door be open for The Red Devils to swoop in and get their man?

Marcelo has been at Real Madrid since 2007 and he’s made almost 280 appearances for the Spanish powerhouse. He’s also made 37 appearances for Brazil, so he’s got plenty of experience at the very top level.

All this and he’s only 26-years-old. The next few years should be the best of his career. With this in mind, it looks like a good time for Manchester United to make their move.

He’s got a huge amount of technical ability, he’s great on the ball, he’s nippy and he’s got a good cross on him. To say that he’d be a significant improvement over Louis Van Gaal’s current options would be an understatement.

It’s not clear how much Real Madrid would want in return for their Brazilian left-back, but he’s certainly worth pursuing. I don’t doubt that he’d be worth the investment.

What’s your take? Is Marcelo the right man for Manchester United?
