Kiko CasillaLiverpool’s recent 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers will have done little to settle fan’s nerves. The general consensus was that The R’s were the better side, particularly in the first half. The Reds defensive frailties were there for all to see. Unfortunately, from what we’ve seen thus far this season, there’s little evidence that Brendan Rodger’s boys are ready to compete for the Premier League title again.

Whilst Simon Mignolet wasn’t particularly bad against QPR (I would argue that there were a few occasions when he could have been more commanding), most fans still feel that Liverpool could do better.

The Belgian ace is capable of turning in some world-class performances, but he’s also capable of the occasional stinker. He doesn’t seem to inspire confidence in his back-four and he’s gifted opposition players with a few easy goals before.

Of course, no goalkeeper can be completely error free, but I think it’s fair to say that there are better options out there.

This brings me to The Metro’s claim that Liverpool have their eyes on Espanyol’s talented keeper, Kiko Casilla (that’s Casilla, not Casillas, though wouldn’t it be nice if Brendan Rodgers was looking to sign the Real Madrid legend?). The source even carries quotes from the player who makes it pretty clear that he’s up for grabs at the moment:

‘I’ve not had a call from anyone at Liverpool yet. Espanyol are like most Spanish clubs – they need money – and if my departure happens, it’s because Espanyol needs the money. When the bids happen, if it happens, we will value it and decide what happens.’

The aforementioned source claims that the 28-year-old could be available £8m. From what Casilla says, if Liverpool can cough up that much money, his team will have little choice but to sell up.

Whether or not he’d be first choice at Anfield remains to be seen, but it’d certainly up the competition and hopefully inspire better performances from The Reds’ current number one. Either way, it looks like a step in the right direction for Liverpool.

What’s your take? Is Brendan Rodgers right to bring in a new goalkeeper? Could Kiki Casilla be the right man for the job?
