Could Liverpool really be in the market for Iker Casillas?

CasillasGenerally speaking, Brendan Rodgers spent Liverpool’s money quite smartly during the January transfer window. He bolstered his defense by bringing in new recruits like Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno and he’s secured The Reds future by snapping up like likes of Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic.

One area that he didn’t bolster, however, was between the sticks. Could this be something that he seeks to address in the January transfer window?

After all, I can’t be the only one who remains unconvinced by their current keeper, Simon Mignolet. The Belgian is capable of registering some top draw performances, but he’s also wildly inconsistent. I’d also argue that he doesn’t organise his back four as well as he might. If he was truly in charge of Liverpool’s defense and was as vocal as he needs to be, there’s no way The Reds would have conceded 50 Premier League goals last season.

The thing that Simon Mignolet needs more than anything else is competition. If he knows that there’s somebody waiting to grab his place in Liverpool’s first team, he’s unlikely to let complacency slip into his game. If he’s constantly looking over his shoulder (metaphorically speaking), then his performances are sure to improve.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool are ‘set to make an offer’ for Real Madrid ace, Iker Casillas. If they pull off this deal they really would be upping the competition level considerably in the goalkeeping position.

Still, now that Casillas is 33-years-old, I’m not sure that the Spanish legend would walk right into Liverpool’s first team. After all, he’s made a number of high profile errors in the last couple of weeks and he failed to impress for Spain during the World Cup. There’s no doubting his credentials, but it’s also clear enough that he’s not the player he used to be.

Luckily, he’s more than good enough to make his mark in the Premier League. I’d certainly love to see Liverpool grant him the opportunity to re-ignite his career.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Iker Casillas?
