KhediraArsenal’s lack of quality defensive options has already cost them big time this season. With The Gunners new attacking additions still adapting to their new surroundings, the team need a solid base to build on going forward. Unfortunately they just don’t have that at the moment.

They’re woefully short of options among their back-four and both their defensive midfielders aren’t fit for purpose. Mathieu Flamini is too slight and too small (and he doesn’t seem to be sharp enough) and Mikel Arteta isn’t really a defender. He’s an attacker who’s had to curtail his natural instincts in order to adopt a new role within his team.

With all this in mind, the January transfer window can’t come soon enough. The transfer market will provide Arsene Wenger with an opportunity to rectify all of the issues within his squad.

First on his list will be signing that elusive defensive midfielder. From what we’ve heard thus far, their main target will be Real Madrid star Sami Khedira. As The Metro note, the German’s contract will expire at the end of the season when he’ll be available as a free transfer. Arsenal may well be able to persuade Carlo Ancelotti to sell in January, whilst he can still get a fee for the player.

The source also claims that Arsenal’s current German stars, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil have spoken to Khedira whilst on international duty in an attempt to tempt him to move to The Emirates.

For Arsenal’s sake, let’s just hope that they’ve been successful. Sami Khedira is physically tough, he’s tall, he’s strong in the air and he’s tough in the tackle. He’s also fairly handy going forward. This versatility and strength in the midfield is likely to make all the difference for Arsenal as the season progresses.

Arsenal fans have been crying out for a Nemanja Matic figure for some time now. They could be about to get that in the shape of Sami Khedira.

What’s your take? Are Arsenal’s German stars right to try and persuade Sami Khedira to move to The Emirates?
