Mats HummelsThe Gunners are currently in a position where one more injury could effectively put an end to any hopes they might have of earning silverware this season.

Given that Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are the club’s only out-and-out centre-backs, if one of them were to get sidelined for any reason, it would have a major effect on Arsenal’s back-four. It’s already been twisted and contorted into some unseemly shapes, due to a lack of options in other positions, but things could still get significantly worse.

There will be those who may feel that Calum Chambers could do a job, but it’s worth remembering that he’s just 19-years-old. What’s more, he’s currently needed in the right-back position, where he’s filling in for the injured Mathieu Debuchy.

In other words, the January transfer window can’t come soon enough. The quicker The Gunners can bring in some fresh defensive recruits the better.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are ‘confident’ that they will be able to seal a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s superstar defender, Mats Hummels.

The German World Cup winning centre-back is currently enjoying the form of his life. He’s a huge presence in the centre of Dortmund’s defense and he tends to win everything in the air. He also positions himself extremely well, loves to slide into tackles and he’s good at distributing the ball from the back. If you take Per Mertesacker and cross him with Rio Ferdinand, you’re going to end up with something approaching Mats Hummels.

The aforementioned source suggests that Arsenal are hoping to snap the German ace up for £32m. That’s no small sum, but given how much The Gunners are charging their season ticket holders, it’s certainly within their financial wheelhouse. If Arsene Wenger genuinely is interested in Hummels, he has all the tools necessary to convince Dortmund to sell.

It’s all a matter of how ambitious he’s feeling. He’ll know that he needs to fix The Gunners defense this January, now he just needs to decide how much money to throw at the problem.

What’s your take? Is Mats Hummels the right man for the job at The Emirates?

How out of touch are you ? Kossy has been injured for some time….add to that Per is way off the pace……….BUT we will not spend £32 mill on any defender, because Arsene does not think defenceis important….never has !

I old rather buy Pogba and Sneiderlin the bring Jenks back right back …suddenly we have a proper team.

Yes he can solve the arsenal problem if Wenger is ready to go for him but I will prefer Leceister City Morgan & Ashley William before him considering the fact they have adapted to the premiership & their availability to play in UCL

Arsene Wenger is a very capable and intelligent Coach, but somewhere during his career at Arsenal he has become more of a Financial Manager looking at all costs to have the best deals but in a league where all the top or challenging teams are looking to create invincible teams this has not least been his objective. Like whats said above he has to ambitious enough to brush shoulders with the biggest. The Statement of intent has been made by bringing in Ozil and Sanchez or even Wellbeck. But these players need to be protected by the best defense possible and the most agressive Midfielder possible. Wenger should somehow listen to what advices he is getting free from all corners. With money now available he can salvage this situation in January itself. Get this guy Carvallo or Khedira and that lad from PSG and please a very good central defender . He can get Hummels . But he has to pay , even Draxler now seems fit to com e as well as Mraco Reus. If he can get these then beware Arsenal. Even Chelsea will not be able to stop them. But he has to bear in mind that the other extremely ambitious guy will try to foil each and every one of his plans. He has to be prepared for it.
