Fabian Schar (Basel)Arsenal’s lack of defensive personnel already has fans waiting with baited breath for the January transfer window to re-open. How can The Gunners be in this position so soon after the summer transfer window closed?

Arsene Wenger overloaded his attack (you’ve got to feel a little for Joel Campbell, who surely deserves a shot) at the expense of his defense. Now the injuries are piling up and The Gunners are paying the price.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Arsenal are keen on FC Basel’s defensive prodigy Fabian Schar. Unfortunately, they’re not alone. The source suggests that Tottenham are ready to go ‘head-to-head’ with The Gunners in a heated battle to sign the Swiss star. Things could get a little feisty by the time that January rolls by.

Spurs have already sent their sporting director, Franco Baldini to watch the Swiss centre-back in action against Real Madrid. FC Basel ended up losing 5-1, so I’m not sure what he would have learned. Still, his presence proves that Tottenham are interested in the player. So too are Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund. It looks like Arsenal have some major competition.

Still, the aforementioned source claims that Fabian Schar could be available for as little as £10m. Arsenal have more than enough money to make a deal happen. They also have enough money to hold off all the other interested parties by offering the player a decent wage-packet.

At 22-years-old, Schar strikes me as the perfect third choice centre-back. He’s clearly got lots of talent, but he won’t necessarily be agitating for a regular first team slot straight away. At a club like Arsenal, there’s a good chance that he’ll be willing to bide his time and wait for an opportunity.

He’s tall (6 foot 1 inches), strong in the air and tough in the tackle. He positions himself well and works hard to get into decent defensive positions.I’m sure he’ll fit in nicely in the Premier League. Now we just need to wait and see if Arsene Wenger agrees.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners swoop up Fabian Schar? Will they be able to beat Spurs, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund to the punch?
