Van Gaal1Manchester United have faced a series of lows over the last year or so, but none felt lower than their 4-0 defeat at the hands of MK Dons.

In their summary of the game, The BBC reported that ‘League One MK Dons thrash[ed] Manchester United’. Strong words. Unfortunately, they’re also completely true.

Right now there appears to be a cloud hanging over each and every Manchester United fan. When is it going to stop raining?

Let’s not forget, this is a season where Manchester United have already lost to Swansea City and drawn with Sunderland. Fans have every right to be gloomy.

Even the arrival of Manchester United’s record signing, Angel Di Maria, has done little to raise the spirits. Whilst there’s little doubt that the Argentine ace will make an impact at Old Trafford, he’s going to have to fight against all the mediocrity, inexperience and poor judgement that’s currently prevalent at his new club.

It can’t be a coincidence. New signings turn up, boost fan’s confidence and then proceed to disappoint on a weekly basis. Do we really believe that footballers like Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata simply lost their mojo when they moved to Manchester United?

Let’s focus on Juan Mata. Before moving to United, the Spaniard was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. He won Chelsea’s Player of the Season twice in a row. With The Red Devils, he’s shone occasionally, but has otherwise struggled to make his mark.

This should be a player that Manchester United build a team around. He should be The Red Devils’ Cesc Fabregas. Instead he’s crammed into a team that lacks direction, experience and know-how. It’s a glorious waste of talent.

Are we really expecting Ander Herrera to shine under similar circumstances?

Louis Van Gaal has a mammoth task on his hand. He needs to change the outlook of all his players, tinker with Manchester United’s system, build a team of leaders and provide his team with some competitive edge.

This is a team that doesn’t lack for talent. Those in charge just need to figure out how to get the most out of their personnel before it’s too late. Manchester United are on the verge of going into a Liverpool-esque footballing wilderness.

That is completely unthinkable. Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal can turn this around. One thing’s for sure. Given Manchester United’s recent performances, I won’t be holding my breath.

What’s your take? Where do Manchester United go from here?
