Nicolas Otamendi (Valencia)Manchester United’s defense at the moment is a genuine sight to behold. How they could be so drastically short of options so early on in the season is beyond me.

Louis Van Gaal and the entire Manchester United hierarchy spent money like it was going out of fashion this summer. Like a kid in a candy shop, they snapped up all the attacking talent they possibly could.

I think it’s fair to say that the arrival of players like Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria got Manchester United fans excited again. But they can’t rescue The Red Devils all on their own. They need their defensive team-mates to start pulling their weight as well.

That’s the one thing that Van Gaal didn’t do in the summer. He failed to add balance to Manchester United’s squad and he’s paying the price now.

As such, he’s going to have to wait until the January transfer window to right his wrong. That’s still some way away, but what can you do?

According to The Star, he’s already weighing up his options and drawing up a wishlist. The source suggests that he’s interested in signing Valencia’s talented centre-back, Nicolas Otamendi.

Otamendi’s only been in Spain since last February, when he moved from FC Porto as part of a 12 million euro deal. Immediately after this, he was sent out on loan to Atletico Mineiro (which strikes me as a weird decision).

The 26-year-old is a full Argentine international with 16 caps to his name. I’m sure he’ll slot in nicely next to Marcos Rojo (who hasn’t looked overly convincing thus far).

Since leaving FC Porto, he seems to have lost his way. Moving to Old Trafford could help to get his career back on track.

He’s tall, he’s powerful and he’s strong in the tackle. He’s got enough quality to make an impact in the Premier League and lord knows that Manchester United need options. He’s unlikely to break the bank, but he could make a major difference for his new team.

This strikes me as a no brainer for The Red Devils.

What’s your take? Is Nicolas Otamendi a good option for Manchester United?
