Cavani2Danny Welbeck looks like a good signing for The Gunners, but it’s not clear whether he’s got what it takes to lead Arsenal’s line for years to come.

Whilst both Welbeck and Olivier Giroud (who’s currently out with a long-term injury) are top quality strikers, but Arsenal’s strike force isn’t as impressive as Manchester City’s, Chelsea’s or Manchester United’s. It’s probably on par with Liverpool’s but even that’s up for debate.

Arsene Wenger is renowned for cultivating attacking talent, so it’s been a little odd to see him avoid signing new strikers in recent years. He’s been keen enough to over-pack his midfield, after all…

I can’t help but feel that The Gunners need one more top quality option in this department. If they can snap up a striker who can offer them 30 goals a season, there’s no reason why they can’t challenge for some major silverware over the coming years.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Edinson Cavani, Paris Saint Germain’s superstar striker, could be available during the summer transfer window. If he is, he’s exactly the kind of player that The Gunners should be interested in.

Unfortunately, Arsene Wenger’s been fairly nonchalant about Edinson Cavani. He’s not been shy of talking up the Uruguayan’s quality, but he’s also noted that there’s ‘no room’ for him within The Gunners’ squad.

This, I think, is patently ridiculous. There didn’t seem to be much room (or much need) to sign Mesut Ozil, but that didn’t stop Arsene Wenger from splashing the cash. Let’s not forget that Arsenal are a lot weaker upfront than they are in the centre of the park.

There’s every reason to believe that Cavani is the 30 goal striker than Arsenal need. In three seasons at Napoli, he never scored less than 33 goals. In total, he found the back of the net 104 times in 138 games, a quite staggering return.

He’d improve Arsenal immeasurably. That’s why Arsene Wenger needs to try and make room for him within his squad.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be chasing Edinson Cavani?
