Should Liverpool cash in on this £2m star?

Glen Johnson (Liverpool)Glen Johnson hasn’t enjoyed the best year. Whilst Liverpool football club as a whole are on the up, he’s struggled to make a positive impact. I think it’s fair to say that the fans have turned on him and are ready to see him leave the club.

Scour the web and you’ll find plenty of evidence to suggest that he’s a waste of space and that he’s not good enough to wear the shirt. This, I think, is a little unfair. If you cast you mind back a couple of years, you’ll remember that Glen Johnson could be quite effective on his day.

More than that, however, his football was very easy on the eye. He’s the kind of full-back who loves to bomb on at any available opportunity, get into attacking positions and make stuff happen in the final third. His pace, technique and crossing ability made him a real asset.

But as he’s aged, quality has slowly been stripped from his game. He’s still pretty nippy, but his passing seems to have lost its edge and his crosses suddenly aren’t finding their mark any more.

With Brendan Rodgers making smart additions across his entire squad, I think it’s fair to start questioning his future. Part of me will be sad to see him go, but it may well be necessary. It’s funny how things change, isn’t it?

With his Liverpool contract set to expire in a years time, it looks like he’s set to move on one way or another. The Reds would be wise to sell him whilst they can still pick up a transfer fee in return.

As it happens The Star claim that Real Madrid, Roma and Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing Glen (what a bizarre mix of clubs). It wouldn’t surprise me if Harry Redknapp was interested in engineering a cut-price deal.

The source suggests that Roma could be readying a £2m bid. That’s not a huge amount of cash, but every little helps. It would be another step forward for The Reds and an opportunity for Glen Johnson to re-invigorate his career. I’d call that a win-win.

What’s your take? Should The Reds send Glen Johnson packing?
