Should Arsene Wenger take responsibility for Arsenal’s defensive woes?

Wenger Capital OneAll in all, The Gunners have a strong squad. Their midfield is jam-packed full of talent and both Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud have goals in them. Unfortunately, their defense just isn’t up to snuff.

The main problem, is that Arsene Wenger didn’t bring in enough new recruits this summer. He let Bacary Sagna go and sold Thomas Vermaelen. Now injuries have struck his team and The Gunners have come up seriously short.

Calum Chambers looks like a useful utility player (who can fill in in a number of defensive positions), but he’s also young and relatively inexperienced. With Mathieu Debuchy out on a long term injury, there’s a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

Nacho Monreal is also injured, so Arsenal are running out of options in full-back positions. It’s not like Kieran Gibbs has a good injury record, does he? God forbid that either Laurent Koscielny (who is rumoured to have a problem with his ankle) or Per Mertesacker picks up an injury.

Hopefully that details the extent of Arsenal’s defensive difficulties. The Gunners’ team is now seriously lop-sided. For this, I can’t help but feel that Arsene Wenger needs to step up and take responsibility.

That’s why I was disappointed to see his most recent comments on the club’s defensive situation. Check them out: “There was not a lot on the market and if you look at other clubs they had the same problem. Everybody is looking for defenders.”

“I feel we made a very good buy with Chambers and now we’ve been a bit unlucky to lose Debuchy and Monreal at the same time together. It doesn’t matter how many players you buy if you have bad luck, you can have three players in every position because it’s impossible to manager that many as well.” (Source: The Express)

The fans aren’t asking for three players in every position. But how about more than two proper first choice centre-backs (Wenger has previously admitted that he views Calum Chambers as a future defensive midfielder, after all)?

I find it difficult to believe that there weren’t good options for a third-choice centre-back out there. How about Kosta Manolas (who ended up moving to Roma) or Toby Alderweireld (who’s now at Southampton on loan). Wouldn’t they have been a good fit?

The market may not be having with options, but it’s better to have somebody who can fill in, than nobody. Arsene Wenger has seriously under-cooked his defense. Shouldn’t he be taking responsibility for this?

have severally remarked that this guy is big, big joker. He talks what he thinks he knows better than anyone. Players are human beings and can never treated as machines (robots). But even machines (robots) can wear out with time. His excuses and utterances have somehow hindered the progress of the Squad trophies wise.

We should have been creating the same impact like others instead of coming up with excuses.
