One of the strangest Arsenal-related transfer rumours from the summer was the claim that Arsene Wenger was interested in Paris Saint Germain’s young attacking midfielder, Adrien Rabiot.

Even if he’s a prodigious young talent (which he is, by all accounts), it’s difficult to see where he fits into this team. Arsenal’s midfield is brimming with talent. They can call upon players like Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and many more. Heck, even Abou Diaby is making his return from injury.

Where would a young player like Rabiot fit in?

But as the season has kicked into gear, it’s not clear that The Gunners’ midfield is quite as strong as we’d like it to be. Aaron Ramsey is out of form. Jack Wilshere is inconsistent. You never quite know what version of Mesut Ozil will turn up. Tomas Rosicky put in his worst performance in an Arsenal shirt against Southampton. Abou Diaby is a constant injury doubt.

With all this in mind, there’s every reason to believe that a player like Adrien Rabiot could break into Arsenal’s first team, if he’s willing to be patient, work hard and grab at any opportunities presented to him.

Oh, and let’s not forget the main reason why Arsene Wenger is likely to be interested in the youngster. Rabiot’s PSG contract will expire next summer when he’ll be available as a free transfer. If The Gunners move in for him in January, The Metro claim that they’ll be able to seal a cut price deal for as little as £5.6m.

That’s a lot of money for a 19-year-old, but with Juventus and Roma also waiting in the wings, Arsene Wenger would be foolish to let the opportunity pass him by.

He’s extraordinarily talented given his youth. He’s got great technique, always looks comfortable on the ball and he can pick out a killer pass. Over the next two-or-three years, he’s going to blossom into quite the player. Let’s hope that Arsenal are going to be a part of his development.

What’s your take? Are The Gunners right to chase Adrien Rabiot? Should they wait until the summer to try and sign him?
