Is Mats Hummels Manchester United’s next big transfer target?

Mats HummelsFinally, Manchester United have sprung back into life! Their 4-0 victory over a weak-looking Queens Park Rangers side showed plenty of promise. The Red Devils looked to be back to something approaching their free-flowing best. They certainly had lots of firepower going forward.

There were plenty of false dawns during David Moyes’ tenancy as Manchester United boss, but hopefully Louis Van Gaal has now got his club on the right track.

My only worry is Manchester United’s lack of quality centre-back options. If Marcos Rojo fails to make a considerable impact at Old Trafford, then The Red Devils could be a little short in this department.

Louis Van Gaal has a number of youthful players he can turn to, but he’s lacking experience in the centre-back positions. I can’t help but wonder if the big sides with exploit this weakness as the season progresses.

Perhaps this is why The Express continues to link Manchester United to Borussia Dortmund’s superstar centre-back, Mats Hummels. It’s clear that they have a deficit in this area of the pitch and this German man-mountain looks like the ideal solution.

At 25-years-old, Hummels is already a World Cup winner and a Borussia Dortmund legend. Since joining the club in 2009 he has made 227 appearances. His stature has grown over the years, but it’s been clear that he’s a supremely talented individual from the very beginning.

At 6 feet 3 inches tall he’s something of a man mountain, which means that he wins just about everything in the air. He’s not the paciest defender in the world, but he does position himself well and he’s not afraid to get physical with opposition players. He reminds me a little of Rio Ferdinand (who’s now plying his trade at QPR – we’ve come full circle!).

Luckily, it looks like Hummels would be up for a move, somewhere down the line. Check out these quotes from the player himself:

“If I wanted to leave the club one day I would want it to be 100 per cent open and fair for everyone. I wouldn’t like to say: ‘Oh, by the way, thank you for the last year, it was nice but I’m off.’ I would like the club to have time to adjust to it.”

In other words, Manchester United shouldn’t expect this deal to be easy. It may take time and effort to sign him up, but I’d argue that it’d be worth it.

What’s your take? Should Mats Hummels be Manchester United’s next signing?
