Is Louis Van Gaal wrong to question Danny Welbeck’s ability?

Danny WelbeckI can’t have been the only person to have been shocked by Louis Van Gaal’s recent comments about ex-Manchester United star, Danny Welbeck. Here they are, for you to digest and analyse:

‘He [Welbeck] does not have the record of van Persie or Rooney. That is the standard. That is why we let him go’. (Source: The Metro)

Wow. For a manager with as much experience and nous as Louis Van Gaal, this comment seems mysteriously judged. Could there be a hint of sour grapes in what he said, or is that really how the Dutchmen feels?

First things first, Danny Welbeck has been at the club since he was 8 years old. He’s been improving consistently over years and there has been plenty of evidence to suggest that he’s good enough for Manchester United.

Those comments strike me as a little disrespectful given that they’e aimed at one of the hardest-working footballers to ever have thrown on a United shirt.

Oh, and let’s not forget. Danny Welbeck is just 23-years-old. To compare him to Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie is a little harsh. Back when RVP was his age, he’d spend the majority of the season out injured (things don’t seem to have changed too much in this regard).

What’s more, Danny Welbeck doesn’t have Wayne Rooney or RVP’s record largely because he was always third or fourth choice at Old Trafford. If he was a nailed on starter each week, perhaps things would be different. If he hadn’t been forced out wide for periods of his career, perhaps he’d have more goals to his name.

I am by no means trying to suggest that Danny Welbeck is better than either of the aforementioned players. I’m just trying to provide the balance that Louis Van Gaal seems keen to dispel.

Of course, only time will tell if Van Gaal made the right decision. If he enjoys a career renaissance at The Emirates then the Dutchman may well have to eat his words.

One thing’s for sure. Danny Welbeck’s going to be more fired up than ever. Let’s just hope that he’s ready for his new challenge.

What’s your take? Was Louis Van Gaal right to be so dismissive about Danny Welbeck?

Webeck is a good player and contributes more than just goals. However he is not exceptional. For me i think LVG should not have said that but i agree with him. If he couldnt start because the players mentioned then surely he is not good enough. Even SAF thought he was not good enough to start. So i dont understand why pple are making noise about this. Ok he was improving, yah improving but not yet there. A good enough player cannot be loaned out. The next thing is you are going to say Cleverly was good enough.

I trust LVG judgement because of his experience. I liked Welbeck’s effort but in most cases he failed to impress me. We still have cover for the future and that includes Hernandes. Falcao cld be made permanent. Don’t judge based on feelings or personal interest but facts.
