Mathieu Debuchy (France)Recently, Arsenal fans received the news that their new right-back, Mathieu Debuchy is out of action for the next 3 months. He fell awkwardly after trying to pluck the ball out of the air during The Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

During his fall, he suffered ligament damage, which required an operation to fix. Here’s what his manager, Arsene Wenger had to say:

‘He [Debuchy] had surgery on Friday and will be out for three months. All went well, but it can be a week or two earlier or a week or two later, but it will be around three months.’ (Source: The Metro)

If I know Arsenal, and the cautious nature of Arsene Wenger, it’ll be one or two weeks later, rather than one or two weeks earlier. The Professor won’t want to risk him picking up an injury early on in his recovery, not when he’s got so few defensive options.

This brings me to the main thrust of this article: how hopelessly under-cooked are Arsenal in the key defensive areas? How are The Gunners already in a position where they’re struggling to put a decent starting XI together?

Wenger also chimed in on his side’s lack of defensive options: ‘It is a blow of course, how big it will be we will only know afterwards because it will be down to how well we replace him. We bought Chambers for that.

It is a major blow. Without decent defensive options, all of Arsenal’s attacking thrust could be for nothing. What’s more, it can’t be good for Calum Chambers to keep getting thrust across the pitch. He’s too young to be a utility player. He should be learning his trade in whatever position he’s going to be playing in for the rest of the career, not getting put in a constant state of flux.

With Nacho Monreal out for a few more weeks, The Gunners are simply going to have to make do. One thing’s for sure. One more defensive injury and Arsenal will likely be out for the count.

What’s your take? Why do Arsenal have so few decent defensive options? Did Arsene Wenger make a costly mistake in the summer transfer market?
