Could Liverpool still be keen on Xherdan Shaqiri?

Xherdan ShaqiriFor large swathes of the summer, The Reds were linked to Xherdan Shaqiri, a talented Swiss winger. The fact that England played Switzerland last Monday night seems to have re-triggered these rumours. It’s almost as though the papers are utilising current events to help fuel their otherwise completely arbitrary rumour-mill. But they wouldn’t do that, right?

Still, as hard as it all is to believe (especially as Brendan Rodgers did end up spending a lot of money on Lazar Markovic this summer – another talented young winger), it’s difficult not to get excited at the prospect of seeing Shaqiri in a Liverpool shirt.

The Swiss international has a truly ridiculous amount of talent. Sure, he wasn’t able to help his international side beat The Three Lions, but he was clearly his team’s danger man. The accuracy of his balls into the Swiss strikers, his technique and his direct attacking nature were on full display.

It’s scary to think that he’s just 22-years-old. Imagine how good he’s going to be once he’s hit his peak.

Unfortunately, he seems to be a little wasted at his current club, Bayern Munich. In his first season at the Allianz Arena, he played 39 games. In his second he played just 26 times. That’s a serious case of diminishing returns.

It’s not like he’s not good enough to deserve game time. There’s just too many players directly in front of him in the pecking order.

As such, I can’t help but feel that the player needs a change of scenery. Perhaps a move to Liverpool would make sense after all. Shaqiri’s agent, Edrin Shaqiri, certainly seems to be open minded. Check out these quotes:

“Now he was not released, but there is a repeat in the winter, and we will look at how many games Xherdan will have played by then.” (Source: The Metro)

In other words, if Liverpool are still interested, then this deal is still do-able. And why wouldn’t Brendan Rodgers be interested in a player with this much raw ability?

What’s your take? Where does Xherdan Shaqiri’s future lie?
