It’s not an easy time to be a Manchester United fan. Things just don’t seem to be going The Red Devils way at the moment. This isn’t a blip – it’s a full blown crisis.
But there are some reasons to be cheerful. Or, more precisely, there’s one reason to be cheerful: his name is Angel Di Maria.
The ex-Real Madrid winger is a class act. There’s a good argument to suggest that he’s the best Premier League signing that was made this summer (even if he wasn’t the most cost efficient signing).
The hope will be that he hits the ground running. Fans will certainly want to see him make a quicker impact than his manager, Louis Van Gaal.
There’s been a lot of debate over who’s the better player: Alexis Sanchez or Angel Di Maria. It’s unsurprising I suppose – both are new additions to the Premier League and both spent last season playing for two top Spanish clubs. Oh, and they both play down the flanks.
Naturally enough, Arsenal fans seem to prefer Alexis Sanchez, whilst Manchester United fans seem to fancy Angel Di Maria. Who’d have thought?
Interestingly enough, Sanchez has struggled to adapt in his first few games in English football. Whilst he looked decisive and slick in La Liga, he’s looked uncertain in the Premier League. His passing is tentative and inaccurate. His attacking play has been a little predictable. His shooting is a little wild.
There’s no need to panic – Sanchez will come good. But his form should act as a cautionary tale for Manchester United fans.
The Red Devils are searching for a solution to all their woes at the moment. Louis Van Gaal will hope that he’s found it in the form of Angel Di Maria. In the long-term, that may prove to be the case, but expecting, or demanding the player to have an instant impact is churlish.
Regardless of his price-tag, Di Maria deserves a period of time to adapt to his new surroundings. With that in mind, if he doesn’t produce the goods straight away, let’s try not to overreact.
