Why Manchester United have to seal this £42m swap deal:

Manchester United have been chasing Arturo Vidal for most of this summer, but with the transfer window about to slam shut, Louis Van Gaal could well be forced into action. Surely he has to make some kind of statement of intent before the opportunity is snatched away from him?

After a slow start to the season, Manchester United’s need for a big signing is clear for everybody to see. If The Red Devils sit still, they’re in danger of being caught with their pants down.

The Metro recently ran an article suggesting that Manchester United are cooking up ‘one last offer’ in the hope of tempting Juventus into selling their key midfield man. It looks like Louis Van Gaal is going big. The source suggests that he’s willing to offer £42m AND Javier Hernandez is return for Arturo Vidal.

I wonder how Javier Hernandez feels about this. He’s gone from being one of Manchester United’s brightest sparks to being a makeweight in a big money transfer for another player. It’s a big fall from grace and it’s one that’s not really merited given the effort and application he’s put in over the years.

Still, he is somewhat surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. If his exit helps to prompt the arrival of Arturo Vidal, then it’s probably for the greater good of the club.

If this goes ahead, it would be an absolutely mammoth piece of business on the part of Manchester United. It would lay a marker down for the rest of the Premier League: ‘We mean business!’

We all know what Arturo Vidal would offer this Manchester United side. He’s got bags of energy, he’s nippy, he’s got technical ability and he’s confident in front of goal. This, combined with his competitive edge, helps to make him a complete midfielder. He’d walk into just about any midfield in the world and he’d improve this Manchester United side significantly.

Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal is able to drag this one across the line.
