BernardnaLast Saturday, The Gunners kicked off their Premier League campaign with an unconvincing 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. It was a performance that would have had Arsenal fans hoping that Arsene Wenger’s work in the transfer market isn’t over quite yet.

Yes, he’s managed to bring in exciting options like Alexis Sanchez and Calum Chambers, but if Wenger can add a couple more options to his squad, they should be able to compete for The Premier League title.

Interestingly enough, The Gunners keep getting linked to attacking options, despite being strong in this area of the pitch. Names like Edinson Cavani and Eduardo Vargas seem to keep popping up. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, right?

This brings me to The Gunners rumoured interest in Shakhtar Donestk star, Bernard. Could the brilliant Brazilian prove to be just the ticket for Arsenal?

At 21-years-old, Bernard has an inordinate amount of talent. He’s technically gifted, nippy and he’s full of confidence. It could take him a while to settle in, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to take the Premier League by storm.

Given the political situation in the Ukraine, it wouldn’t surprise me if Bernard is looking for an escape route from Shakhtar Donestk. Arsenal could be about to provide him with one. The Metro suggest that Arsene Wenger is looking to wrap up a season long-loan deal for the youngster.

The Metro even quote a ‘club source’ who said the following:

“To let him go for free or for pennies won’t work. The club will not allow it. In such a situation it is better to give the Brazilian a one year loan. If Bernard is able to establish himself well [at another club] Shaktar will then be in a better position to negotiate a subsequent sale.”

Given the strength of Arsenal’s midfield, a loan deal could prove to be smart. It would help to round out The Gunners squad, whilst keeping the club’s options open for the future. No commitment necessary.

That sounds like smart business to me.

What’s your take? Do The Gunners really need to sign Bernard? Are there other options they should be considering?
