Should Spurs really make a move for Samuel Eto’o?

eto'oIt’s a little bizarre how far Samuel Eto’o’s stock has fallen in recent times. From being one of the most feared strikers in the world, he’s slowly, but surely transformed into a laughing stock.

During his time at Barcelona between 2004 and 2009, he scored 108 goals in 145 appearances. That kind of strike-rate is simply unheard of. He continued to provide the goods at Inter Milan, where he scored 33 goals in 67 appearances.

But then he made a decision that would end up setting his career back in a major way. In 2011, he agreed to move to cash-rich Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. In doing so, he was essentially entering the European footballing wilderness. Yes, he managed to score 25 goals in 53, but he did so outside of the public eye.

As we know, he returned to a top club last season when he joined Chelsea. I think it’s fair to say that he didn’t get on too well with Jose Mourinho, who labelled him ‘old’. Old or not, he still managed to score 12 goals in 34 appearances for The Blues.

Eto’o’s Chelsea contract expired in June 2014, making him available as a free transfer. As a result, he’s been linked to a host of different clubs, many of which reside in the Premier League.

When Liverpool were linked to Eto’o a week or so back, it provoked the derision of fans across social media networks. Now The Metro are linking Spurs with a move for Eto’o. Will it create the same response?

I certainly hope not. Spurs need to be realistic about their current position. Whilst The Reds are competing for the Premier League title, Tottenham are competing for a top four finish.

There’s a big difference. Whilst I wouldn’t build a title-chase around Eto’o, it does strike me that he’s good enough to help Spurs to improve on last season’s output and to challenge the likes of Arsenal and Everton for a Champions League slot.

He’s already had a season in the Premier League, so should do even better this time around. What’s more, he’s available for free, so it’s hardly like this is a huge gamble. He’d provide some meaningful competition to Tottenham’s current forwards and his experience and know-how could be beneficial to the rest of the team.

So maybe we shouldn’t turn our noses up at Samuel Eto’o?

What’s your take? Should Spurs snap up this superstar striker? Has Samuel Eto’o ran his course?

yes, eto’o will help spurs into the top 4. He has all the experience from diffrent leagues and in the premier league. Eto’o is hungry to prove morinho and most critics wrong by trying to score many goals as he can and even try to compete for goal king . So he will realy play out his heart for spurs and expecialy against the other big teams. He has experience in europe and would help spurs in the europa too.
