MbiaHere’s a rumour that you probably didn’t expect to see any time. According to The Metro, Arsenal are in the market for ‘former QPR flop’ Stephane Mbia. Wait, what?

After a summer where Arsene Wenger has quickly brought in a raft of great options, Mbia’s name popping up is unlikely to conjure up much excitement. It’s the kind of rumour that tends to generate a significant amount of derision over social media.

But could it actually prove to be a smart signing on the part of Arsene Wenger?

Here’s what we know: Arsenal’s squad looks pretty well rounded, but it’s definitely lacking in centre-back options (now that Thomas Vermaelen has moved on) and they could probably use a rugged, physical presence in the centre-of the park too.

Given Mbia’s physical presence, tackling ability and versatility, he’d be able to fill in in either position. He wouldn’t be much more than a utility man, or squad player at Arsenal, but he would help to minimize the threat of injury.

Better still, from Arsene Wenger’s point of view, he wouldn’t break the bank. He left QPR this summer, having ran down his two-year contract. He’s available as a free transfer and is rumoured to have 60k-a-week wage demands.

That’s a little excessive for a player of his standing in the game, but I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity to play for Arsenal, should Arsene Wenger offer him it.

The 28-year-old would come with Premier League experience and he’d presumably arrive at The Emirates fired-up and ready to prove that he’s not a flop. With both Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini getting on in years, I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at this signing.

Let’s just assume that Arsene Wenger knows what he’s doing. He doesn’t make too many mistakes in the transfer market after all.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal really be interested in Stephane Mbia? Are there other options that Arsene Wenger should be considering?

No need for Mbia,y not go for Alex song our former player on a long season loan

  • Jebby says:

Not a superstar player but he is solid and a big physical presence. He can score on occasions and as a QPR fan I can say although he wasn’t the best I have seen his heart is there 100 per cent. He appreciates where he is

  • VALERY says:

Go for him. QPR system did not suit him. He did exceptionally very well in Spain.
Very energetic and great at the goal.
