Have Spurs already wrapped up this £8m deal?

Federico Fazio (Sevilla)Thus far, Spurs have had a fairly underwhelming transfer window. The signings that Daniel Levy and co. have brought in haven’t exactly got fans frothing at the mouth, have they?

Still, that didn’t stop Mauricio Pochettino’s side from turning over Queens Park Rangers 4-0 last weekend. Whether this is evidence of a fired-up Spurs side, or a weakened QPR side remains to be seen.

This won’t stop Spurs fans from hoping that their club hasn’t finished in the transfer market quite yet. Another signing or two could help to increase Tottenham’s chances of earning Champions League action next season.

One thing’s for sure: Spurs need to sort out their defense. At the moment, they’ve got too many personnel in this part of the pitch that only manage to perform on a sporadic basis. I’d argue that they need to find a regular centre-back partner for Jan Vertonghen (Spurs’ best and most consistent performer in this department).

This brings me to long-term Tottenham target, Sevilla captain Federico Fazio. Is this man the answer to Spurs’ defensive woes?

I’d like to think so. Either way, it looks like a deal is close. The Metro claim that Fazio is close to finalising an £8m move to White Hart Lane. All we need to do now is await confirmation.

The small price-tag (relative to his ability) is a result of a buy-out clause written into his contract. Sevilla’s Sporting Director, Monchi has confirmed that he’s likely to head to the Premier League this summer. Check out these quotes, courtesy of the aforementioned source:

“There seems to be an English club who are willing to pay the clause. We are waiting to see when the money arrives in the La Liga offices. We are not going to negotiate because our desire is to keep Fazio in Sevilla.”

“Two months ago we talked about renewing his contract, but it was not possible. When an English team appears interested in one of our players, it is difficult because they can multiply player salaries.”

Are Spurs the English team that Monchi is referring to? I certainly hope so. Federico Fazio is an astute defensive presence, one that will provide major competition for Spurs other defensive options. That’s exactly what Tottenham need at this moment in time.

What’s your take? Are you excited to see Tottenham wrap up a deal for Federico Fazio?
