Do Liverpool REALLY need Samuel Eto’o?

Samuel Eto'oBrendan Rodgers took his time, but he’s finally managed to bring in a striker with a reputation that’s somewhat close to that of former Liverpool star, Luis Suarez. The man I’m referring to is Mario Balotelli, who when it comes to troublemaking, is on a similar level to the Uruguayan ace.

When Suarez slung his hook earlier this summer, it seemed difficult to imagine who would replace him. Now the answer seems clear: there’s no replacing Luis Suarez.

All you can do is increase the competition. Brendan Rodgers has opted to heap more responsibility onto Daniel Sturridge’s shoulders, whilst at the same time bringing in some major competition. Mario Balotelli, a striker who has scored 30 goals in 54 appearances for AC Milan, should provide The Reds with plenty of additional firepower.

But it looks like Brendan Rodgers is keen to increase the competition even further. The Metro recently ran an article claiming that Liverpool are still looking to wrap up a deal for former Chelsea star Samuel Eto’o – despite having already agreed terms for Mario Balotelli.

What a mad summer Liverpool are having – the fun just won’t seem to stop. Interestingly enough, it looks like their Merseyside rivals, Everton, are also trying to get in on the action. The BBC are reporting that Everton are closing in on a deal. Is it too late for Liverpool to get their man?

The aforementioned source notes that Brendan Rodger’s concerns over Samuel Eto’o’s fitness have all been answered. This has led to a fresh negotiations and it looks like Liverpool’s next transfer deal could be incoming.

Given that he’s available for free (Chelsea released him earlier this summer), it’s not like this is too big a gamble on the part of Liverpool Football Club.

Alongside Rickie Lambert, Samuel Eto’o will provide ample competition for Mario Balotelli and Daniel Sturridge. With this many options to call upon, it’s difficult to see The Reds struggling for goals over the course of the next year.

Last year, Samuel Eto’o scored 12 Premier League goals. If he improves in his second season on British soil, then he could prove to be a very astute signing indeed.

Let’s just hope that he’s quickly able to dismiss any suggestions that he’s ‘past it’. I can’t help but feel that it would be a mistake to let him go to Everton.

What’s your take? Is Samuel Eto’o a good signing for Liverpool?
