Could Liverpool really be in the market for Alex Song?

Alex Song (Barcelona)Liverpool have already made a host of smart signing’s this summer. Having sold Luis Suarez to Barcelona, they’ve brought in Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Divock Origi and Javier Manquillo. At the time of writing, a deal for Alberto Moreno doesn’t look too far away either.

But Brendan Rodgers’ transfer activity doesn’t appear to be over yet. He’s still getting linked to a host of different strikers, having failed to sign Loic Remy when the Frenchman was unable to pass a Liverpool medical.

For what it’s worth, I can’t help but feel that The Reds also need another defensive midfield option – somebody who can add a little more bite and competitive edge in the centre of the park. They did ship 50 Premier League goals last season after all.

This is surely why The Mirror have linked Liverpool to a move for former Arsenal star Alex Song. The Cameroonian international is a physical presence and he’d come complete with Premier League experience. But is he the man that Liverpool need?

One thing’s for sure: Alex Song doesn’t have much of a future at the Nou Camp. In two seasons at Barcelona, he has made just 65 appearances, many of which were as a substitute. He’s not exactly an integral member of the team.

As such, I’m sure he’d be keen on a move to another big club, especially if promises could be made regarding game-time. In particular, I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity to move to Liverpool, a side with plenty of exciting attacking talent. What’s more, The Reds have a genuine chance of winning silverware this season. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?

Manchester United are also rumoured to be interested in signing Alex Song, but something tells me they have bigger fish to fry this summer. If The Reds really are interested in signing Alex Song, there should be few obstacles in their path.

If he’s available for the right price, perhaps this wouldn’t be such a bad deal after all?

What’s your take? Do The Reds really need Alex Song?
