Cavani4One of the weirdest aspects of this summer is Arsenal’s blindness to their weaknesses. Whilst they’ve spent well in general, they’ve left two areas of their squad drastically short of options.

As usual, their midfield is fit to brimming with good options. It’s the centre-forward position, and the centre-back positions which have been left perilously short of options.

Let’s focus on the centre-forward position. Alexis Sanchez was given a run-out as an out-and-out striker against Everton last weekend. I think it’s fair to say that this experiment was a failure. Alexis Sanchez is likely to operate down the wings for the majority of this season.

That leaves Olivier Giroud as The Gunners only quality option. I don’t buy Yaya Sanogo as a force that’s capable of troubling Premier League defenses. Then there’s Lukas Podolski (who may already have left the club by the time this article is published) and Theo Walcott, both of whom seem to operate better down the flanks than as a centre-forward.

Let’s not forget that Olivier Giroud is a pretty limited option. What he has in physicality and presence, he lacks in pace and technique. He strikes me as a short-term solution to a long-term option.

So why is Arsene Wenger so happy with the options he’s currently got? Surely a manager who favours attacking talent should be keen on adding a little depth to this area of the pitch.

There are on-going rumours suggesting that Arsene Wenger will surprise us all before the transfer window closes.

Take The Express‘s claim that Arsenal are weighing up an ‘extraordinary’ swap deal for Paris Saint Germain’s superstar striker Edinson Cavani. The source claims that Arsenal are willing to offer the Ligue 1 side £32m + Olivier Giroud in order to seal a deal. If Arsenal were to agree these terms, it really would be extraordinary.

Cavani is one of the world’s best strikers. At 27-years-old, he already has 180 goals to his name (from 329 professional games). He’s a fantastic finisher with a tireless work-rate. He’d improve any attack in the world. He’s good enough to transform Arsenal into proper title-contenders.

As such, PSG are unlikely to want to swap him for Olivier Giroud. If Laurent Blanc is having a moment of madness, however, Arsene Wenger needs to capitalize. This deal looks extremely unlikely, but I can’t help but cross my fingers none the less.

What’s your take? Could Arsenal really compete for Edinson Cavani?

Giroud is injured, probably helps if you do some homework before you publish this type of re-hashed nonsense
