Maximilian ArnoldWhilst Arsene Wenger is known primarily for his love of young French talent, his attentions have turned to the Germans in recent years. Arsenal’s first team now boasts players like Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski. Serge Gnabry has been making his way through the ranks and is likely to make it big at some stage in his career. The Gunners have also been strongly linked to Sami Khedira, Real Madrid’s German defensive midfielder.

The Professor hasn’t exactly stopped chasing French talent (he’s only just signed Mathieu Debuchy, after all), but there has been a clear change in priority for The Gunners.

This brings me to Arsenal’s most recent transfer target, a young German midfielder called Maximilian Arnold. You may not have heard of him yet, but he looks set to become a household name over the coming years. The attacking midfielder broke into VfL Wolfsburg’s first team this season and has even garnered a cap for the Germany international side. He’s definitely one to keep your eyes on.

Last season he made 28 Bundesliga appearans, scored 7 goals and made 2 assists. This is a great return for a young player. It’s little wonder that Arsene Wenger is interested. As it happens, the player himself seems to be interested. Check out these quotes, courtesy of The Metro:

“Of course the likes of Juventus and Arsenal are clubs you dream about as a child. But I am on just 36 Bundesliga appearances. If I was on 150, then it might be different. I am a player of Wolfsburg and I am happy to be a part of this team.”

That strikes me as quite a level-headed response from a young footballer. Maybe Arsenal are right to target him after all?

The Metro also note that Arnold’s Wolfburg contract expires next year and he’ll thus be available on a free. With no pressing need for another attacking midfielder, waiting this one out may not be such a bad idea.

The Gunners would get their hands on a top notch player at no cost. What’s better than that?

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be pursuing Maximilian Arnold?
