Adrien Rabiot (PSG)PshopLast weekend The Gunners started their Premier League campaign with an unconvincing win over a well drilled Crystal Palace side. Tony Pulis may not have been on the sidelines to watch his old team, but he was very much there in spirit.

One of the most disappointing aspects of the game from Arsenal’s point of view was the way that their midfield performed. There were misplaced passes a plenty and the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere tended to dwell on the ball for too long.

Judging from Arsenal’s current team-sheet, their midfield should be the strongest part of their squad. Based on their last performance however, that’s just not the case.

Of course, it’s early days, so there’s no need to worry yet. This group of players will get fitter, get on each other’s wavelengths and will start to become more effective. But I can’t help but wonder if the Crystal Palace game will encourage Arsene Wenger to go back out into the transfer market to find another midfield option.

If he does, there’s a good chance that he’ll look at some youthful new recruits. After all, whoever’s brought in will likely have to bide their time and wait for their opportunity in the first team.

This brings me to The Gunners continued interest in Paris Saint Germain’s contract rebel, Adrien Rabiot. According to The Metro, Arsenal have been given ‘permission to hold transfer talks’ with the French youngster over a potential move to the Emirates. Could this prove to be a good fit for both the player and for the club?

One thing’s for sure: Rabiot isn’t going to break the bank. The 19-year-old has a refused offers of a new contract at PSG (likely down to a lack of regular game-time). With only a year left on his current deal, The Metro suggest that he could be available for as little as £5.6m.

That’s not bad for a 19-year-old who’s already demonstrated that he’s got a remarkable level of talent. He’s got quick feet, his passing is very effective and he’s a smart cookie. Is it any wonder that Arsenal are interested?

Let’s just hope that Wenger can wrap this one up and find a place for Rabiot in his team.

What’s your take? Do Arsenal really need another midfielder?
