Fans must be keen to see Louis Van Gaal make his first new signing as manager of Manchester United. After all, the opening day of the new Premier League season isn’t that far away.
If The Red Devils don’t act quickly, they could end up in just as bad a position as they were in last year. Van Gaal may be a better manager than David Moyes is, but he’ll need the right players in his squad if he’s to be a success at Old Trafford.
Both Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw have already been brought in this summer, but they won’t be able to steady the Manchester United ship alone. Shaw, at this stage in his career won’t offer a big improvement on Patrice Evra and Herrera may take some time to adapt to his new surroundings.
Now that both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have left Old Trafford, Louis Van Gaal needs to prioritise fixing his defense. This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are ready to do battle with Barcelona for the signature of Ajax midfielder/left-back, Daley Blind.
Blind, who caught the eye at the World Cup (remember his cross for Robin Van Persie’s header against Spain, or his goal against Brazil in the third-place play-off?) is a versatile defensive option who could prove to be an astute addition to this Manchester United squad if Van Gaal is able to see off the competition.
Blind is able to play as a left-back, or as a defensive midfielder. Given that The Red Devils have just spent big on Luke Shaw, I’m not sure Manchester United are on the hunt for a left-sided full-back. But with Blind playing in front of Van Gaal’s back-four, diving into tackles, winning the ball back and keeping possession, United are sure to be considerably more effective next year.
He may even help to get the most out of players like Herrera, Mata and Januzaj. The Mirror suggest that United are readying a £17m bid for Ajax ace. Let’s hope it’s enough to seal the deal.
