Should Manchester United really be chasing this ‘£79m’ talent?

Kevin Strootman With Manchester United on the hunt for new additions to their unbalanced squad, they can’t seem to stop picking up links to various Dutch footballers. It’s somewhat inevitable I suppose – their new manager is the former Holland international side head coach, after all.

It could just be laziness on the part of the British press, but as a result, The Red Devils have been linked to some big name players who have great reputations. If one or two of these deals were to go through, then Manchester United will be in a much stronger position next season.

This brings me to Manchester United’s rumoured interest in Roma’s Dutch ace, Kevin Strootman. The midfield enforcer may not have made it into Holland’s World Cup squad (as a result of injury), but there’s no doubt that he’s an impressive talent. What’s more, he’s a player that Louis Van Gaal will know well.

Van Gaal will be able to envision where Strootman will fit into his side and is thus in a great position to judge whether Manchester United should look to close this deal.

One things for sure: Roma aren’t going to let him go without a fight. Check out these comments from the Serie A side’s head coach, Rudi Garcia. He was asked about reports linking Strootman with a move to Old Trafford:

‘What can I say about the rumours? Maybe after a three-digit offer, then we will sit down and think about it.’ (Source: The Metro)

Talk about hardball. Despite his comments, I find it hard to believe that Roma would really hold out for 100m euros (£79m) in return for their midfield maestro. It strikes me that Garcia is just trying to build-up his player’s price-tag. I’m sure that if Manchester United were to come in with a reasonable offer, Roma would be willing to consider it.

What’s more, I’m sure that Strootman would enjoy the opportunity to link up with his international manager once more. This could prove to be a match made in heaven, if United can pool all the cash together.

What’s your take? Is Kevin Strootman the right choice for Manchester United? Can they afford to seal this deal?
