Should Liverpool cash-in on this defensive mainstay?

Daniel Agger Whilst The Reds were a genuine force going forward last season, their defense left plenty to be desired. The fact that they conceded 50 Premier League goals should say it all.

If their defense had performed better (or their team were a little more balanced), perhaps The Reds would have walked away with the title last season. They certainly shouldn’t have lost to Chelsea and drawn with Crystal Palace in their last few games.

Now that the summer transfer window is open, Brendan Rodgers is in a position to rectify these wrongs. Thus far he’s been pretty slow to do so.

Worse still, Brendan Rodgers may have to contend with one of his most experienced centre-backs jumping ship this summer. Whilst Daniel Agger hasn’t been at his best over the last 12 months, there’s no doubting his importance to Liverpool Football Club.

He’s one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs thanks to his competitive edge, strong tackling and positional nous. I’m sure that he’d be a difficult player to replace. Given that The Reds already need to sign somebody in this position, Agger’s situation could cause a real headache.

Luckily, Agger has already moved to dismiss claims that he’s ready to leave the club. He did reveal, however, that he’s open to a move, should the right opportunity arise. Check out these quotes:

“If the time is right and everything falls into place then I wouldn’t rule it out. But the timing has to be right. I have thought about it. A lot actually. But I’m here now and that is what I’m focused on.”

“As for the rumours, don’t believe everything you hear. My restaurants were sold four years ago and I’ll be surprised and very sad if anyone has put my house up for sale.” (Source: The Mirror)

Whilst Liverpool fans will be glad that he’s staying, they may well be disappointed that he’s considered leaving. Agger has always stuck me as a player who’s Liverpool through-and-through, but that may not be the case any more.

Let’s just hope that he doesn’t generate too much interest this summer. The Reds will need him next season.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool consider selling Daniel Agger?

Agger has been a loyal servant to Liverpool. His good positioning and menace tackling will still be needed in champions league or maybe on heated matches. We gonna need depth in order to fight in all competitions. His composed and can organise the defence properlly. The thing is that his partnership with Skrtel haven’t been great nowadays but not particularly counting on their plays. He (Agger) lost matches cause of his injuries.Liverpool should use him properlly and respectfully on the right type of match.I think once he wants to continue in a Liverpool jersey keep him and bring him a better player to play along side him.I think he’s gonna thrive playing with Lovren. They are both comanding plus smart!Gotta stay the DAGGER !
