Casillas2Whilst Wojciech Szczesny continues to develop, The Gunners do need to sign another goalkeeper this summer. Failure to bring in another option during this transfer window could seriously scupper Arsenal’s chances of success next season.

There’s no doubting that Szczesny is a good option. Even if he can be rash and make the occasional bad decision, he’s one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League and he’s excellent at collecting the ball out of the air.

He gets better every season and he finally seems to have earned the confidence necessary to perform at the top level.

Arsenal’s main problem is their back-up keeper. After all, they’ve just sold Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea City. The Polish ace was The Gunners reserve keeper last season, helping lead them to FA Cup success. Now that he’s gone, Arsene Wenger will need to bring somebody else in.

This raises the question: will Wenger look to sign somebody whose main job will be to warm the bench, or will he bring in some serious competition for Szczesny? I’m sure fans will be hoping for the latter option.

This brings me to The Mirror’s claim that ‘Legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas wants a move to Arsenal’. As one of the best goalkeepers in the world, this strikes me as pretty significant news.

Of course, it’s worth noting that Casillas’ form has suffered over the last year or so. After 678 appearances for Real Madrid and 156 appearances for Spain (wow!), chinks are finally beginning to show in his armour.

He’s no longer a nailed on starter at the Bernabeu, with Diego Lopez forcing him out of the side. This may well have knocked his confidence, because his World Cup showing was nothing short of abysmal. Throughout Spain’s short stay in the tournament, Casillas made costly errors and conceded a few goals that an in form keeper would have stopped.

But he’s only 33-years-old. Given the career life-span of a keeper, there’s every reason to believe that he could continue to perform to a good level over the course of another long-term contract.

Real Madrid won’t let him go on the cheap, but there’s no doubt that he’d do a good job at The Emirates. It’ll certainly be interesting to see whether Arsene Wenger tests the waters with a big money bid.

I just wonder what Wojciech Szczesny would think, if he discovered that Iker Casillas was competing for his place next season. I think any sense of complacency would be well and truly banished.

What’s your choice? Would Iker Casillas be a good option for The Gunners?
