Is this Premier League ace the perfect Liverpool alternative to Loic Remy?

Jay RodriguezA few days ago, Liverpool’s deal for QPR star Loic Remy looked more or less wrapped up. Then: shock, horror. It all fell apart.

Reports suggest that Remy had been undergoing a medical with Liverpool in Boston (they’re out there as part of their pre-season campaign. Remy failed part of the examination and The Reds decided to end their interest in the player as a result.

Without knowing exactly what it was that Remy failed for, it’s difficult to judge whether this is the right decision for The Reds. It’s safe to say that Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t have pulled the plug without good reason. Still, I can’t help but feel that another club will profit from Liverpool’s decision (perhaps Newcastle United?).

Regardless, this now means that The Reds have to find another centre-forward option to bolster their squad. Having sold Luis Suarez earlier this summer, Liverpool will need to find another top drawer option to lead their line.

Remy looked like a good choice, because of his goal-scoring record in the Premier League. But it’s not like there aren’t any more options out there.

Take, for instance, Jay Rodriguez, Southampton and England star. Last season he scored 17 goals in 39 appearances for The Saints. This was an improvement on the 9 goals he scored the season prior and it also proved to be enough for him to break into the international team. There’s a good chance that he’d have gone to the World Cup if he hadn’t picked up a long-term injury.

There’s also a good chance that this injury has warded off most potential suitors. Whilst Southampton stars seem to be flying off the shelves, Rodriguez hasn’t attracted a lot of attention – until now.

According to The Metro, The Reds are ‘weighing up a move’ for Rodriguez. He’s just signed a new five-year deal with The Saints, so he won’t come cheap, but Liverpool should have the financial muscle to seal the deal. Let’s hope so any way.

The Reds need options in this department and Jay Rodriguez looks like just the ticket.

What’s your take? Is Jay Rodriguez right for Liverpool? Is his injury record a worry?

I think that’s another good option but I believe the players Rogers should focus on bringing to the team to bolster it upcoming challenging PL and CL are Shaqiri valbuena and lavezzi at all cost.
