Stefan de VrijWith the World Cup long gone and Louis Van Gaal officially in charge at Old Trafford, fans are waiting patiently for the Dutchman to make his first signing for his new club.

Manchester United have already brought in Ander Herrera (a technically gifted midfielder from Athletic Bilbao) and Luke Shaw (Southampton’s left-back prodigy), but it’s not clear whether LVG was provided with an opportunity to sign off these deals.

That won’t be the case with the next new recruit who shows up at Manchester United. The Red Devils’ next signing will be the result of Louis Van Gaal’s hard work.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Van Gaal is ready to ‘sanction’ a £10m bid for Feyenoord centre-back, Stefan de Vrij. The source even suggests that the player is refusing to sign for Lazio, because he wants to re-unite with Van Gaal at Old Trafford (De Vrij has made 19 appearances for the Dutch international team).

At just 22-years-old, Stefan de Vrij is one of the most talented young centre-backs in the world. He’s quick along the turf, strong in the air and dominant in the tackle. Whilst some parts of his game are still developing, he does look remarkably complete for a player of his age.

Van Gaal will be well aware of exactly what De Vrij can offer his side. Indeed, with both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic making untimely exits this summer, I’m sure that the Dutchman will look like the perfect fit for Manchester United.

He may take some time to adapt to the Premier League, but given his £10m price-tag, there’s little doubt that he would prove to be an astute investment for The Red Devils. He has experience at the top level, and Van Gaal is in serious need of some defensive nous. This could prove to be a match made in heaven.

What’s your take? Is Stefan de Vrij the right choice for Manchester United? What other options should they consider in the centre-back department?
