Have Arsenal already agreed their next summer signing?

Callum Chambers (Southampton)In news that came a bit out of nowhere, multiple sources (including The Mirror) ran articles suggesting that Arsenal had wrapped up a deal for £7m Southampton right-back, Calum Chambers.

There are two main reasons why this deal has come as something of a surprise. For a start, The Gunners have already signed a right-back this summer.

Mathieu Debuchy confirmed his move to Arsenal a few weeks back. The former Newcastle United full-back is a French international with a decent level of experience. With his addition to the squad, it looked like The Gunners had fixed their full-back issues.

The other reason this is a bit of a surprise if Southampton’s current situation. There’s been a mass exodus of all the team’s top talent this summer and their squad has been more-or-less gutted. I’m surprised they’ve let another full-back go (they’ve also sold Luke Shaw) and I’m surprised they only asked for £7m. It seems like an odd decision on the part of The Saints. I’m not sure how they’re going to recover from what’s happened this summer.

But whilst The Saints seem to be lacking in ambition, the same cannot be said of Arsenal. When Bacary Sagna moved to Manchester City, things started to look a little gloomy. But if they really have wrapped up a deal for Calum Chambers, they’ll now have three decent right-back options: the former Southampton star, Mathieu Debuchy and Carl Jenkinson. Not bad, huh?

There’s a good chance that Carl Jenkinson will now be sent out on loan.  On the balance of things, this looks like a good decision. He’s in dire need of game time and he’s unlikely to get this at Arsenal.

Chambers, on the other hand, has a decent amount of experience at a young age. Despite being only 19-years-old, he has already made 21 Premier League appearances, demonstrating his pace, technique and attacking flair.

Whilst some areas of his game are still developing, it’s clear that he’s a top talent. The best part of this deal is that by the time Mathieu Debuchy moves on, one of Carl Jenkinson or Calum Chambers will be ready to make the step up. It looks like The Gunners have the present and the future locked down.

What’s your take? Is Calum Chambers another good signing for The Gunners?
