Can Liverpool REALLY compete for this £42.5m sensation?

Arturo VidalHaving sold Luis Suarez, Liverpool are now capable of competing with the big boys in the transfer market. Brendan Rodgers is finally able to put his money where his mouth is.

The Reds received a bumper fee for the sale of their Uruguayan trouble-maker, but they’ve already spent a significant chunk of that cash. This hasn’t stopped the papers from linking Liverpool to some pretty major (and expensive) talent.

According to The Mirror, The Reds are ‘set to hijack’ Manchester United’s ‘swoop’ for Juventus’ superstar midfielder, Arturo Vidal. That would add a little heat to the old rivalry wouldn’t it?

The source even suggests that The Reds are willing to match Manchester United’s £42.5m bid for the 27-year-old. It looks like Brendan Rodgers means business!

This strikes me as an interesting case. Whilst Manchester United probably have the better reputation overall and better long-term prospects (arguably!), they’re not able to offer Champions League football. For a player like Arturo Vidal, who’s accustomed to playing football at the highest level, this could prove to be an issue.

Liverpool don’t have this difficulty They’ll be able to offer Vidal Champions League action next season. They’ll also be able to offer him a shot at silverware – they did come pretty close to winning the Premier League last year, after all.

With Steven Gerrard getting on in years, bringing in a player like Arturo Vidal looks like a smart move. The Chilean is currently at the height of his powers – he also has a somewhat similar playing style to Stevie G.

He’s a tough tackler with bags of energy (he’s one of the best athletes in European football), he’s got good technical ability and he’s confident in front of goal. He’s the kind of player who would quickly win fans over at Anfield.

That’s if Brendan Rodgers is able to persuade him to make the move. Liverpool fans will have their fingers crossed and it’ll certainly be interesting to watch this one play out.

What’s your take? Can The Reds afford to compete for Arturo Vidal? Who would the player prefer: Liverpool or Manchester United?

The Manchester Utd hype machine is in full effect. What better long term prospects do they have? No guarantees Van Gaal will do well. Crap defence and midfield, and unruly sulking forwards.
Oh well, anything to get the share prices up.

There is something dodgy going on at united .First some papers question utd s financial stability. They wondered how a club could get in to £400 million debt and then leek out that they were going to spend £200 on new players .If they failed again to qualify for c.l surely this would cripple utd. Then a £500 m sponsorship deal is announced or leaked just so share prices remain stable and players agents see utd are ok for dosh ..SURELY this is against stock market rules and ffp seems very strange a sponsor would commit so much money to a team on the slide and with such a fickle fan base .

I think he would be a great signing for Liverpool but I can’t see Rodgers spending big money on a marquee player. Let’s hope I’m wrong
