Can Arsenal still wrap up this £23m deal?

KhediraNow that Arsenal have officially wrapped up deals for Barcelona’s fleet-footed forward, Alexis Sanchez and Newcastle United’s experienced right-back, Mathieu Debuchy, they seem to have moved on to their next target.

The Gunners name keeps getting mentioned in conjunction with Real Madrid midfielder, Sami Khedira. The German international spent much of last season out injured, but had an excellent World Cup showing (I’d argue that he was Germany’s MVP during their 7-1 routing of Brazil).

Whilst he plays in the holding midfielder role, he does love to get forward an support attacks. When he’s on the ball, he can be very effective indeed. This offensive outlook may be what has proven to be so attractive to Arsene Wenger. He likes even his most defensive-minded players to contribute moving forward.

The Mirror even suggests that The Gunners have lodged a £23m bid for Sami Khedira. That’s a lot of money for a player who only has a year left on his Madrid contract. Exciting times, right?

Not quite. After all, The Mirror claim that ‘Sami Khedira will not be heading to the Emirates this summer’ suggesting that ‘Arsenal are now out of the running’ and that Chelsea are clear ‘to pounce’. After Jose Mourinho’s recent comments about Cesc Fabregas, this story has a real sting to it.

Luckily it’s not all doom and gloom. The source suggests that Arsene Wenger has now turned his attention to Southampton’s defensive midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin.

Whilst Schneiderlin is a good option, I don’t think he’s on Sami Khedira’s level. Not yet any way. At 27-years-old, The German ace is just about at the peak of his powers. He’s worth spending big on.

Arsenal hold one major advantage over Chelsea: their German contingent. The Gunners have major German talent like Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski plying their trade at The Emirates. It’s thought that he’s particularly close to Ozil (they played together at Madrid).

In other words, I think it would be foolish to give up on this deal. The Gunners have the money to compete and they can offer Khedira something that Chelsea can’t. Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger uses his A-game in this case.

What’s your take? Could Sami Khedira still end up an Arsenal player?
