William CarvalhoIn recent times Arsenal’s hunt for a defensive midfielder has seen them garner links to Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin.

Both players would offer the likes of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini a serious run for their money. With the Spaniard and the Frenchman getting on in years, it’s clear Arsenal could use another body in this area, but can they really compete for Khedira and Schneiderlin?

I’m not so sure. Khedira was one of Germany’s best players throughout the World Cup. He was particularly awesome during the German’s 7-1 routing of Brazil. He may only have a year left on his Real Madrid contract, but the Spanish powerhouse won’t let him go without a fight.

Then there’s Morgan Schneiderlin. Whilst on the face of things, this deal doesn’t look too difficult to wrap up, Arsene Wenger will need to consider The Saints’ current situation. Southampton have been forced into selling all their best players this summer and may be in the mood to dig their heels in when it comes to any future deals. This could result in Arsenal paying over the odds.

With that in mind, it may be smart for Arsenal to start looking at other options. This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market for Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfield prodigy, William Carvalho.

The source even suggests that Arsene Wenger has lodged a 24m euros (£19m approximately) bid for the 22-year-old. That’s quite a show of intent. Unfortunately, Sporting Lisbon aren’t that interested in selling for below his 45m euros (£35.6m approximately) release clause.

In other words, The Gunners are going to have to significantly up their bid if they’re to get their man. Having already spent big on Alexis Sanchez this summer, there’s a chance that Arsenal won’t have enough money to win this particular deal.

Still, I can’t help but feel that William Carvalho is exactly what The Gunners need. He’s physical, smart and he’s a great tackler. Given his ability at a young age, he may well prove to be a worthy investment, should Arsene Wenger decide to take the plunge.

What’s your take? Is William Carvalho the right choice for The Gunners?

A defensive midfielder should of been Wengers priority this summer but he stilll hasn’t bought one yet. Wenger pisses me off with is ignorant attitude to building a well balanced squad. Wenger is obssessed with attacking midfielders so much so,he uses attacking midfielders as defensive midfielders. Denilson Song Diaby and Arteta, have all been asked to play defensive midfielder over the years, which is pathetic management from Wenger.

    • kevin says:

Song, Denilson and Arteta played as Defensive midfielders early in their respective careers,….
But good to see you’re using your knowledge well.

I feel that Wenger should sign two world class defensive mifielders in Cavalho and Bender and then offload Arteta and Diaby but retain Flamini. Good luck Gooners

Decision of not signing William Calvarho is jus like cultivating the farm by using the stick. If we want a team balance then huge amount of money is needed. Calvarho is a young player to invest fo 10 yrs future. Please Arsene decide today to pay the said ammount, after Remy and Manquillo livepool will

  • Gab says:

Wenger has started his usual way in the transfer. What is really wrong with arsen ???? He promised to build from last season mistakes and up till now only two signings but the team need a proven striker and a strong holding medflider. None of these areas is taken care of. We are not happy again with you and the board.

  • jewel says:

Wenger should sign him or cry again come next season!

  • Emirates Alan says:

A rumour is coming out if the Emirates that a high up is questioning Wenger’s judgement. He was promised big money but is refusing to spend it. As Nat King Cole sang ‘There may be trouble ahead’. It is very strange how Wenger has suddenly changed direction.

    Not Surprised Wenger is stalling.
I was at the AGM meeting when a Club DIRECTOR (not mentioned) told me that Wenger was given £50mil go ahead to buy Sturage, but he thought the player was not worth more than £30mil. He eventualy gave in to the Directors argument regarding players age and merchandise would make the player worth £50mil, so he compromised and reluctantly made an insulting bid of £40mil and one pound!
When he was proved to be wrong by not capturing Sturage for £50mil, he promised to buy Ozil after having egg on his face.
The board argued with Wenger that capturing big money signings is the only way to expand world wide by grabing thwe attention of world wide media. hence expanding the merchandise of the club.
We would have won the league with Sturage if Wenger wasn’t so stuborn.
There is a list of world class missed players due to Wenger being money cautious: Messi, Roanldo, etc. etc.
