Could Spurs REALLY be in the market for Rio Ferdinand?

Rio FerdinandHere’s a rumour that you probably didn’t see coming. According to The Mirror, Spurs are now ‘favourites’ to sign Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand. It’s a funny world isn’t it?

While most of Spurs problems lie with their lacklustre strikeforce, I think it’s fair to say that they could improve their defense.

Michael Dawson can be extremely effective on his day, but he’s also wildly inconsistent. He’s not the kind of player that you can afford to rely on. Neither is Younes Kaboul, whose injury problems proceed him. That leaves Jan Vertonghen and Vlad Chiriches, who are both good defenders. Unfortunately, they’re both players who could easily be tempted away from White Hart Lane.

It’s up to the Spurs top brass to prevent this from happening, but failing that, they’ll need to make sure they’ve got back up options. Back up options like… Rio Ferdinand.

After 12 years at Old Trafford that saw him win just about everything there is to win, Manchester United didn’t offer poor Rio a new deal this summer. This means that he’s available on a free.

Naturally enough, the vultures have started to circle. It’s thought that LA Galaxy, Galatasaray and QPR are all interested. Luckily, Spurs seem to have burst into the lead. The Mirror even claim that White Hart Lane is Rio’s ‘preferred destination’ and that he’s already moved his family to London.

This really does look like Tottenham’s deal to lose. And given Ferdinand’s price-tag, it also looks like a real no-brainer. Providing the experienced international doesn’t hold out for huge wages, I’d love to see Spurs swoop in here.

Of course, Ferdinand is no spring chicken. He’s now 35-years-old and his game has already begun to slow down. But class is slow to fade. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rio has a couple of years left in him at the very top level. What’s more, I’m sure he has lots to offer the Spurs squad when it comes to his personality, attitude, experience and leadership qualities. He’s the gift that keeps on giving.

What’s your take? Should Spurs make a move for Rio Ferdinand or steer well clear?
