RodrigoImagine what Arsenal could have achieved this season if they had more than one decent striker among their ranks. Olivier Giroud has been forced to carry the entire weight of The Gunners attacking threat and at times he has been woefully inadequate.

The likes of Yaya Sanogo and Nicklas Bendtner just aren’t up to snuff, so when Giroud struggles, Arsene Wenger really does have nowhere else to turn.

It’s a wonder that The Gunners managed to stay on top of the Premier League table for as long as they did. But with Giroud scoring just 3 goals in his last 10 games, Arsenal have slid down the table and are now facing a serious battle for a top four finish.

The FA Cup could yet ‘save Arsenal’s season’, but it’s clear that Arsene Wenger has some work to do in the transfer market if he’s to compete on multiple fronts next year.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market to sign Benfica’s gifted young striker, Rodrigo. He’s so good he doesn’t need a second name!

The Spanish international has been in sensational form this season, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances for the Primeira Liga side. He has also excelled at International level, scoring 15 goals in 16 appearances for the Spanish U21 side (wow!)

All this and the 23-year-old is still valued at just £15m. Given his technical ability, his pace and his pure goal-scoring ability this strikes me as something of a no-brainer for Arsene Wenger.

The Professor loves a bargain and I’m sure he’ll view Rodrigo as exactly this. Good strikers don’t come cheap, but this one is affordable and would represent a considerable step-up on his current options.

His last spell in the Premier League didn’t go particularly well, (he was loaned out to Bolton Wanderers three year ago, where he scored 1 goal in 20 appearances) but he’s come a long way over the last 18 months or so. He’s now one of Europe’s hottest properties and I’d love to see The Gunners move in for him.

What’s your take? Would Rodrigo be a good choice for the Gunners?
